Top 5 Trades of All Time

Today, cataloging the best 5 trades of all time from the "winner's" perspective. Be it these trades helped their teams win a ring right away, and/or give them a keeper for years, these are the best of the best.

NWL - 5/5/2012 - 12:09 AM

Two Starts receive:

Bryce Harper - OF

Geovany Soto - C

Aaron Hill - 2B

Kaiden's Krew receive:

Vance Worley - SP

Miguel Montero - C

Angel Pagan - OF

Jesus. #1 with a bullet.

In looking at stats from 2012, Worley was coming off a very solid rookie year where he won 11 games and had a 3.04 ERA, Pagan had stole over 30 bases, and Montero put up very solid offensive numbers for a catcher. Trading a 19 year old who just came up a few days before, I can see it, in theory.

It just didn't work out though. Worley was a mediocre player, and while Montero and Pagan were decent pieces for the Krew, they certainly weren't keepers, and didn't help win a title.

Meanwhile, its 8 years later and I still can't get Harper off Bran.

Crab Cakes receive:

Tim Lincecum - SP

Power Bolts receive:

Andruw Jones - OF

In Wombat's first year, Andruw Jones was still a star, at least in theory. He was having a down year, but was only a year removed from 40 plus home runs and a solid average. That was enough to get someone to bite on him, in exchange for a prospect. I opted to deal him to the Power Bolts, who had an extra arm in the rookie Lincecum.

At the time, Lincecum had a 4.00 ERA and promising K numbers. He'd have an okay rest of the year, and showed enough for me to keep him, despite not haven proven anything yet. From there, it's history. He'd win a Cy the very next year, and lead the Crab Cakes to back to back titles in 2009 and 2010.

Meanwhile, Andruw Jones never did have that bounce back year, going to the Dodgers in 2008 and putting up very mediocre numbers.

Killer Pandas receive:

Noah Syndergaard - SP

Han Solo Shots receive:

Francisco Liriano - SP

Alex Wood - SP

Andrew Bailey - SP

Chris Owings - SS

A classic Jon-Mike trade if there ever was one. Since this happened before the season started, I tried to justify it by looking at stats from 2015. It still makes zero sense. Andrew Bailey was a rumored potential closer for the Phillies after saving 6 games the previous year - he of course never go the job. Alex Wood had a 4.40 ERA in 2015. Liriano had a decent 2015, but was on the wrong side of 30 with an extensive injury history. He wouldn't even make it the full year in MLB before being traded to the Blue Jays. Owings is the definition of bench player.

We'll miss you Mikey, but Jon most of all.

Pez Sox receive:

Roy Halladay - SP

Bobby Crosby - SS

Ham Sandwiches receive:

Derek Jeter - SS

Javier Vazquez - SP

Ah, 2007. We were young, Nick G and I were both just 24 years old. Clearly though, he was a bit wiser then.

It was just the second trade in Wombat history (Dice-K for Grady being the first), and boy was it a big one. Halladay would be kept between the Pez Sox and Tommy Johns for 5 more years, while Jeter and Vazquez...not so much.

On the surface of things, this clearly looks like a Jeter for Halladay deal, but it's easy to forget Javier Vazquez was a pretty good pitcher himself back then. He'd win 15 games in 2007, with good strikeout numbers and a decent ERA. What really makes this deal not a TOTAL loss though, is Vazquez was later dealt to the Megas in a package in exchange for one 24 year old Justin Verlander.

NWL - 3/22/2018 - 9:53 PM

Crab Cakes receive:

Robbie Ray - SP

Jose Martinez - 1B

Jorge Alfaro - C

Carlos Gonzalez - OF

Luke Gregerson - RP

Killer Pandas receive:

Christian Yeilch - OF

Luis Castillo - SP

A.J. Minter - RP

Alex Avila - C

Lewis Brinson - OF

10 players in this deal, and only 1 mattered. Yelich was the fantasy and real life MVP, and so far in 2019, looks like he's keeping those power numbers up. To give you an idea of what these ugly ass negotiations look like, here's a peak at the chat from back then:

Digusting. I'm awful at this.
