Due to an overwhelming amount of pressure I decided to cave and do an NL draft recap. Just kidding, I'm well aware no one but Dan is reading this right now, and I hate draft recaps, but I'm here anyway. Working from home is so cool until you realize you're a boring-ass person.
Without further adieu, a bunch of words that don't mean anything... you either win the championship or you don't!
Round 1
Best Pick: Charlie Blackmon – Han Solo Shots
Worst Pick: Kyle Hendricks – Tommy Johns
I gotta be honest... I'm pretty surprised I didn't end up listing Eduardo Nunez as worst pick. At the time of the draft, I thought it was a reach, but Eduardo has lived up to the hype and is 40th overall on the player rater. While by no means a bust, Kyle Hendricks narrowly edges out Trevor Story as being the worst pick of the first round. That's what Nick gets for thinking I would pass on Matt Carpenter! Hendricks should've been my bust!
Round 2
Best Pick: Billy Hamilton – Tommy Johns
Worst Pick: Jeurys Familia – Two Starts
Billy Hamilton has 31 stolen bases and we're still a few weeks out fromthe All-Star Break. Meanwhile Familia was a pick GM BCov has gone on the record as regretting pretty much immediately. These things happen. Hamilton would be traded to the Crab Cakes and Familia is a free agent for anyone to add (if you're into hurt players.) I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Kyle Schwarber has made a solid argument for being a worse pick then Familia. Not less then an hour ago, the Cubs demoted him to AAA...
Round 3
Best Pick: Wade Davis – Crab Cakes
Worst Pick: Kenta Maeda – Killer Pandas
Justin Turner and his Ted Williams average were barely edged out by a half season of dominance from Wade Davis. You can argue it either way. After that, there are lots of ugly picks to choose from here. Unfortunately I'm going to have to go with my own, someone I was super high on and thrilled to get in round 3, the recently demoted-to-the-bullpen Kenta Maeda. What can I say, I Maeda-mistake.
Round 4
Best Pick: Matt Kemp – Han Solo Shots
Worst Pick: Matt Moore – Time Consumers
Matt Kemp was the last pick of the round, making his #50 spot overall on the player rater all the more valuable. He was the clear-cut best pick of the round, with really no competition. On the flip side, Adam Eaton tore his ACL at the end of April, and was the player I listed originally as worst pick. But then I saw he was pretty decent in April before going down, whereas Matt Moore has just continued his career track record of being a huge disappointment, carrying a 5.82 ERA and 1.58 WHIP in 85 Innings at time of this posting. Luckily for the Time Consumers, it has only hurt their bench.
Round 5
Best Pick: Anthony Rendon – Two Starts
Worst Pick: David Dahl – Crab Cakes
Anthony Rendon has been a beast.
David Dahl has not played a single inning this year.
How many David Dahl trade offers did you get before Dan finally dropped him?
Round 6
Best Pick: J.T. Realmuto – Time Consumers
Worst Pick: Adrian Gonzalez – Two Starts
In a round full of bust and disappointments, J.T. Realmuto stands out as the #3 NWL catcher on the player rater (#92 player overall.) While there are plenty of terrible picks in this round, Adrian Gonzalez has had 165 ABs this year but has managed only 1 HR and a career-low .255 AVG, and now he's on the DL for the second time.
Round 7
Best Pick: Jake Lamb – Crab Cakes
Worst Pick: Jared Eickhoff – Kaidens Krew
Jeez Dan seriously did every round of this? I didn't read it. Ok, I did, but I wasn't happy about it.
Anyway, Jake Lamb is a baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahd man.
Jared Eickhoff is a bad pitcher.
Round 8
Best Pick: Adam Duvall – Kaidens Krew
Worst Pick: Logan Forsythe– Two Starts
Losing... all... interest.. to... continue.... this... recap...
Round 9
Best Pick: Robbie Ray - Time Consumers
Worst Pick: Adam Ottavino – Crab Cakes
Robbie Ray is the best pitcher in the major leagues that no one talks about and this might be the best pick of the draft. On the other hand, Adam Ottavino does not have a save on the year, and blew his lone save opportunity. Dan tried to outsmart everyone and wasted a pick in the process... that's why his team sucks! (editors note: Crab Cakes are 9-2)
Round 10
Best Pick: Marcell Ozuna– Kaidens Krew
Worst Pick: Joe Ross – Killer Pandas
What the hell was I thinking?
Round 11
Best Pick: Gio Gonzalez – Kaidens Krew
Worst Pick: Jeanmar Gomez – Killer Pandas
Kevbomb has a lot of good picks I'm not sure why his team isn't better.
I had a lot of horrible picks, it's completely obvious why I'm terrible.
Going to play word association from here on out. First word is for best pick, second word is for worst pick. 1.. 2.. 3.. GO!
Round 12
Best Pick: Justin Bour– Kaidens Krew
Worst Pick: Carter Capps – Tommy Johns
HMM AWW
Round 13
Best Pick: Yangervis Solarte – Tommy Johns
Worst Pick: Randal Grichuk – Time Consumers
TERRI-GOOD MINORS.
Round 14
Best Pick: Addison Reed – Han Solo Shots
Worst Pick: Adam Wainwright – Tommy Johns
SAVES OLD
Round 15
Best Pick: Michael Conforto– Schatzy Turtles
Worst Pick: Patrick Corbin – Two Starts
STEAL BUST
Round 16
Best Pick: Ivan Nova – Time Consumers
Worst Pick: Blake Treinen – Kaidens Krew
CY? BYE!
Round 17
Best Pick: Alex Wood – Han Solo Shots
Worst Pick: Austin Meadows – Crab Cakes
DROPPED'EM WHO?
Round 18
Best Pick: Chris Owings – Han Solo Shots
Worst Pick: Kolten Wong – Tommy Johns
KNEW IT KNEW IT
Round 19
Best Pick: Ryan Zimmerman – Time Consumers
Worst Pick: Adam Conley – Schatzy Turtles
Forget what I said about Robbie Ray. Ryan Zimmerman is best pick of the draft.
Round 20 and on:
Wait. What? No, this can't be right... forget what I said about Robbie Ray and Ryan Zimmerman being the best picks. The best pick of the draft was the Killer Pandas taking Cody Bellinger in Round 24. Wow. I'm such an idiot. So done with NWL articles (and the NWL.)
